Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is DotCode?

A: DotCode is a 2D dot-matrix symbology designed for high-speed industrial printing. It uses a grid of dots rather than bars and is commonly used for tobacco and beverage serialization with GS1 data.

Q: How do I scan a DotCode symbol?

A: DotCode is an industrial symbology, so most consumer barcode scanner apps won't recognize it. Use industrial-grade scanner apps such as Scandit Barcode Scanner or Cognex DataMan.

Q: How do I generate multiple codes at once?

A: Enter one value per line in the data field. The app will generate one DotCode symbol per line, up to a maximum of 12 codes at a time.

Q: What's the difference between grid and one-per-page layout?

A: Grid layout places all codes on the current page in a grid arrangement. One-per-page creates a separate page for each code, which is useful when you need each code on its own page for printing.

Q: Why does my code show a contrast warning?

A: DotCode symbols need high contrast between the foreground and background to scan reliably. If you see a warning, try using darker foreground colors or lighter backgrounds.

Q: Can I undo after adding a code to my design?

A: Yes! Use Canva's undo feature (Ctrl+Z on Windows or Cmd+Z on Mac) immediately after inserting a code to remove it.

Q: Does the app remember my settings?

A: The app remembers your layout preference (grid vs. one code per page) between sessions. Other settings reset when you reopen the app.
