Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is ABC notation?

A: ABC notation is a text-based music notation system that uses letters and symbols to represent musical notes. It's a simple way to write and share music without needing special software. Letters A-G represent notes, and various symbols modify pitch, duration, and more.

Q: My notation isn't rendering. What's wrong?

A: Make sure your ABC notation includes at minimum:

  • X:1 - A tune number
  • K:C - A key signature (must be the last header line)
  • At least one note after the headers

Example: X:1 (new line) K:C (new line) C D E F

Q: Why is my title not showing?

A: Add the T: header field. For example: T:My Song. The title will appear above the staff in the rendered output.

Q: How do I add sharps and flats?

A: Use ^ for sharp and _ for flat before the note. Examples: ^F (F sharp), _B (B flat), =F (F natural to cancel a key signature accidental).

Q: How do I write chords?

A: Put notes inside square brackets. Example: [CEG] creates a C major chord (C, E, and G played together).

Q: Can I add lyrics?

A: Yes! Add a line starting with w: after your music line. Each syllable is separated by spaces, and hyphens connect syllables of the same word. Example:
C D E F | G2 G2
w:Twin-kle twin-kle lit-tle star

Q: The "Add to design" button is disabled. Why?

A: The button is disabled until valid notation with at least one note is entered. Make sure you have proper headers (X: and K:) followed by actual notes, not just header fields.

Q: Can I use this for copyrighted music?

A: You're responsible for ensuring you have rights to any music you transcribe. Public domain music and your own compositions are fine. For copyrighted works, obtain permission from the rights holder.
